Bought One and then Another

Review by TK, 2010-08-15

I bought the first because I was looking to buy my first architect's lamp as I always thought they were pretty cool looking and would go well with my new l-shaped desk. This one was black the color I wnted, large sized and looked good (metal not cheap plastic). The 1st one I bought came in three days (or two - can't remember), it had free shipping and no tax - I paid 20 bucks for it. I popped in a flurecent bulp and the white light it emitted was enough to replace the cieling light in my small bedroom where I have my desk. I keep the heads turned upside down as this gives off more light.

I liked the 1st one a lot so I bought a second for the same desk and for this I had to pay shipping but again no tax. Both are great and the same color (black), they have a white version but I think the black looks more classy. Overall good look, good quality and good price.

Cheap, and feels that way

Review by Chuck Shavit, 2010-08-13

You get what you pay for: a lamp that works, and looks pretty much like the picture in the site. But because the springs and the fasteners are cheap, the engineering balance between free movement and having the lamp keep its position when not moved has not been achieved. If you mostly keep the lamp in one position, then you can adjust the fasteners accordingly. But if that's the case, why did you need a swing arm lamp to begin with?

A+ on delivery B+ on product

Review by wingfinder, 2010-08-12

Good job amazon! Two day shipping received in 28 hrs. I'll take that. Contrary to some reviews the product at least came in an Alvin box. I have never had an Alvin lamp so it may still be a fraud, but if there is an excellent Alvin lamp this must be it.

I admit there are better lamps out there and some of the fixtures are a little shoddy, but this lamp is perfect for working, my studies, and for something to play with when I am bored. Worth the price and definitely on time for delivery. Box in near-perfect condition.

Getting better

Suits my need

Review by DaveM, 2010-07-18

Hard to beat for the price. I needed a computer desk lamp that could easily be moved out of the way in a fairly cramped space, and this looked like it might work. I didn't have any trouble with the minor assembly, and just a bit of messing arount to get the clamping mechanism properly fitted to my desk.

Make sure you have an appropriate place to clamp the base of this lamp onto the back or side of your desk surface before purchasing, or you will end up frustrated. Note also that if you wish to position the lamp over the base (to get it out of the way) then you will need about a foot of clearence behind or to the side of your desk for the arm to fold back. (This turns out to be a non-problem for me, given my space contours.)

Overall I am satisfied with this purchase, especially given the low price. I have 3 minor complaints though:

1) The lamp housing gets rather hot. I suppose this is true for all lamps, but the metal housing is particularly succeptible.

2) I have to regularly re-tighten the mid-arm and housing joint clamps, as they work there way loose after just a coouple of lamp moves.

3) The lamp arm does not swivel on the clamped base. So arm movement is simply extend and fold. One can loosen, swivel (a little bit) and retighten the clamp base to achieve a bit of swivel result though.

Again, these are minor issues for me, and the price was unbeatable.
